The CORE Workshop - Chirality in Practice took place on 20-24 May 2019 in Groningen, the Netherlands hosted by Beneficiary Partner, Syncom. All Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) and their supervisors, together with representatives of the associate partner organisations, external experts, the project manager and the project assistant, met to discuss the CORE project.

This workshop consisted of a scientific component in which the ESRs were trained on Chiral Synthesis. In addition, the industrial component of the workshop covered how the workshop theme relates to industry (for instance a seminar on a specific industrial challenge by one of the industrial partners):

  • A presentation of how a quotation is made for work including purchase of chemicals, search of literature for procedures, time allotment, risk management (Richard Kellogg)
  • Chirality, business and Viedma ripening (Dr. Bernard Kaptein, Innosyn)
  • A tour of the Syncom facilities (Mark Hamminga, Dr. Michel Leeman and Richard Kellogg)

Furthermore, the workshop included discussion sessions on developing the CORE Toolbox.

The ESRs had their own private evaluation session to discuss general successes, strengths and weaknesses of the Network to date. The outcomes of this session were reported to the CORE Steering Committee, who will act on the reported issues.

In addition, the workshop contained a transferrable skills component.

The workshop timings for ESR training were roughly over the two and a half days (Monday, Thursday and half day on Friday, usually finishing after lunch). The Tuesday and Wednesday were set aside for the network – ESR presentations and meetings, this was when the Supervisors, Associate Partners and External Experts were invited to attend.

A detailed agenda is presented below.

Who?

Early Stage Researchers (ESRs), their supervisors and colleagues, representatives of the partner organisations, external experts, the project manager and project assistant were invited to participate in this event.

Practicalities

All ESR participants were expected to be present on Monday 20 May 2019 at 08:45hrs until Friday 24 May 2019 at 12:00hrs.

All Supervisors, Associate Partners and External Experts were invited to be present on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 May 2019.

TRAVEL

To travel from Schiphol airport to Groningen takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes by train. Trains leave every 30 minutes. One train is direct whereas a brief change is required for the other. [Full train schedule will be sent together with info how to get from train station to hotel in due course].

ACCOMMODATION
ESRs and Supervisors made their own hotel arrangements.

Recommended hotels included:

City Hotel Groningen, Gedempte Kattendiep 25, 9711 PM Groningen www.cityhotelgroningen.com

Best Western Hotel Groningen Centre, Radesingel 50, 9711 EK Groningen

The Student Hotel, Boterdiep 9, 9712 LH Groningen www.thestudenthotel.com/groningen

The preferred recommendation was City Hotel Groningen. The other two were more than acceptable and located right in the centre of Groningen, which is not a large city. The Student Hotel is a regular hotel rather than one specially for students. For all hotels, it is not more than a 15 minute walk from the train station. One can take a taxi, of course.  Prices run about euro 90-100 euro/night. Each hotel has cancellation policies. It is wise to book in plenty of time because there are other conferences taking place in Groningen at the same time.

People who come with a car should look at the website of the hotel to get recommendations for parking. There are quite a few (expensive) parking garages in Groningen.

SOCIAL EVENT
